The more astrophysicists study the universe, the more these scientists realize that their knowledge is limited to the mere surface of what can be comprehended with our current technology – in other words, not much at all.

Since the 1930s, thanks to the work of astrophysicist Edwin Hubble, we’ve known that the universe is vast and constantly expanding, comprising hundreds of billions of galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars.

Since the mid-1990s, thanks to Nobel Prize-winning physicists Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, we have evidence that exoplanets, some potentially habitable, orbit these stars, suggesting that life forms could have emerged and developed elsewhere besides Earth.

Although the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program, started by Americans in the early 1960s, hasn’t yet produced conclusive results, much has been said and written about Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).

Credible Testimonies These sightings began at the end of World War II, and to this day, tens of thousands of observations have been recorded worldwide, sometimes supported by particularly credible testimonies, notably from experienced fighter pilots.
In the late 1990s, the Cometa Report, commissioned by Lionel Jospin and written by General Bernard Norlain, provided a comprehensive overview of these phenomena, some of which still lack rational explanations despite thorough investigations by the National Gendarmerie and the Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena Study and Information Group (Geipan).

Thus, all hypotheses remain open, especially since some observations or stories of contact with entities from elsewhere are particularly unsettling.

For the first time, a documentary gives voice to French people who claim to have been in contact with extraterrestrials, through four accounts of “close encounters of the third kind.”

“The Elsewhere,” directed by Sébastien Duijndam, has just completed its funding on the crowdfunding platform Kisskissbankbank and will be released in a few months. What if we weren’t alone? A meeting with a director who has his head in the stars.

korii: How did you come up with the idea for this project?
Sébastien Duijndam: This is a subject that has always interested me and has greatly influenced my reading. What’s fascinating is the common story among people who claim to have been contacted, with the idea of meeting an extraterrestrial entity. I had read “Passport to the Cosmos” by John Mack, who was the director of the psychiatry department at Harvard University.

He studied over 200 abduction cases, meaning abductions by aliens. Initially, he didn’t take these testimonies seriously. But over time, he realized these people had suffered significant post-traumatic shock, leading him to believe they were telling the truth. Moreover, some events are disturbing, like in Zimbabwe in 1994, when sixty-two schoolchildren witnessed a flying saucer landing and saw two beings emerge.

How did you approach the people who testify in “The Elsewhere”
Gaining their trust was a significant part of the work. It’s quite challenging to contact abductees because they are very fearful. It’s not easy for them to talk about what they’ve experienced. I found them through people in ufology circles, with the support of the Cero-France association, which helps abductees and has even created support groups. It took me six months.

What is their profile?
These are people from different regions of France who lead quite normal lives. They are ordinary French people who work and have no psychiatric history. People like you and me, who had never considered the possibility of extraterrestrial life but became interested afterward.

What do they say about their experiences?
There’s a common thread; all describe nighttime contacts with small beings who paralyze and put them to sleep. They then find themselves in a spacecraft or compartment bathed in very intense but non-blinding white light. This place resembles an examination room.
They describe skin or other biological samples being taken, especially around the genital areas. These visitors might be like space researchers studying us in a scientific context. This is the testimony of all the contacted people. There are two for whom these encounters date back to childhood. Others experienced contact later, but it continued sporadically over time.

“Have contactees practiced hypnosis to bring repressed memories to the surface?
All of them have, with quite convincing results. I attended one of these sessions which I show in the documentary. When you think of hypnosis, you might imagine it happens immediately. In reality, it’s a long process that sometimes drags a bit.
Through hypnotic regressions, these people have managed to remember their contact. They have suffered immense psychological trauma. Hypnosis is a therapy that helps them piece together the fragments and better understand what happened to them.

In recent years, several countries have declassified their UFO files, notably Mexico, but also the United States.

Sebastien Dujindam, director of the documentary “Les Ailleurs”How can we be sure it’s not hallucinations or fabrications? The contacted individuals have experienced an ontological shock, meaning at the very roots of their being. There has been a very significant transformation in them; they are confronted with a real “after.”

Beyond the abduction and contact with extreme otherness, their worldview and life have completely changed. Unfortunately, these people also suffer from marginalization. They are mocked, sometimes even within their own families. However, there is an incredible opening of consciousness in them regarding space, life elsewhere, Earth, ecology… Contactees are isolated yet very open to the world.
Have the people interviewed in “Les Ailleurs” testified to authorities? Going to the police to report a third kind encounter is complicated. Their open-mindedness is quite limited. When it’s just a UFO sighting, it might be okay. However, contactees have described spacecraft in statements that have been duly recorded.
Thanks to Geipan, there is a list of specific questions for receiving this type of testimony. In recent years, several countries have declassified their UFO files, notably Mexico, but also the United States, which have made the conclusions of Project Blue Book – the equivalent of the Cometa report – accessible, as well as England.

Recently, there were three videos filmed by U.S. Navy pilots that leaked and ended up on social media. They were authenticated by the U.S. military hierarchy. It’s up to each individual to form their own opinion.
